Walking in a Winter Wonderland

5 August Thirty and flirtyThats right.. the BIG 30!! I hardly feel different, but flirty for SURE!! hehehhe!!
I had a great day with my friends - as my roommate Hollie organized a surprise party and a whole day of food and fun. I woke up to a decorated apartment (which we had done the night before after a few glasses of red wine) and chocolate cake for breakfast.. then we had a real breakfast - eggs and tim hortons coffee :-)
That afternoon, we headed out to Lost Lake and was met by my friends and a "hidden bbq" since there is a fire ban.. yes.. i must say my friends are pretty special to risk doing that for me.. eating, drinking and playing in the COLD water, was a day to remember.. this summer has seen a lot of rain in the month of june, and as a result, the second wettest summer on record -which explains the cold water
But the day just kept on getting better.. more cake, and suprisingly a very generous amount of cash was given to me collected by all my friends to go towards a backpacking tent. I bought myself a really nice 2 man Sierra Designs tent, and was fully paid for.
I consider myself very lucky and fortunate to have the friends i do, and especially my rooommate for putting on a spectacular party. -as she always said - you are only 30 once! (however - i think i will be FLIRTY forever)
-- As for now, Crankworx is just finishing up, there is still snow up on Rainbow mountain, and hiking season is about to finally kick off. I am sticking around for another season in WB working for HOUSE .
I just did my first -xcountry/downhill bike race and man was it ever hard!! 84 minutes later and freaking tired - i had so much fun. i am in a weekly mountain biking group and am learning alot of skills and techniques.. Been to the northshore twice - still out of my league - but had a great time the first time.
hope you are all well and will hear from you soon
i will put my pics online and let you know when they are ready 14 July Summer is finally here!BBQ's. Mountain biking. swimming. white water rafting. bear watching tour. and to think that summer has just begun.
June brought alot of rain, thus no days at the lake, or bbq's. But July has come full swing with HOT HOT HOT!
I have started a new job with the mountain and am very happy working for the Employee Experience division in the staff housing department. I am still on 4 days a week, and am riding my bike to work a few days a week since i work 9-7pm. It is so cruisy and feels like a real job! I am year round finally and feel like things are finally working out. I have moved back to my old apartment in westsid staff housing, and have a wonderful roommate - hollie. We were friends my second year in Whistler, and I managed to hook up with her and her boyfriend when I was in Oz.
I have also joined a mountain biking club every monday and am greatly improving my skills and techniques. I even managed to go to the NOrthshore to do some downhill mountain biking - having survived with no major injuries and no body armour - i will be going back next week to tackle the Northshore.
White water rafting was an absolute blast - my first time ever, and the water levels are so high because of how much snow is still melting- we managed to only lose one person from my raft- but i was ablet o save him. As for bear watching, yes, i went on an actual tour with some friends from work. It was a really neat experience being able to sit there and watch them, and drive up both mountains. All in all we saw 14 bears and cubs.
Next week I am turning the big 30! as for what is happening.. that is up to my roommate..all i know is that i will be wearing PINK!!
stay tuned for more to come
xx 16 April Hey now.. I'm an ALL STAR!Okay...not quite.. but close. I recently spent the weekend in an girls ROXY ALL-star snowboard camp, and it absolutely rocked ! By the end of the camp, I was hitting all the jumps and boxes in the Terrain park (dont get too exicted - as it was the kids terrain park
It was well worth it and I learned alot.. as for going pro soon - I dont think so.
Let's see.. I was very lucky to have some friends of mine from back home come up for a visit, and I think they brought the sunshine with them since we had perfect weather the one day they were here. Molly and Amanda and I had the best time on Whistler mountain and was able to show them the new Symphony area, which has become a favorite of mine. This new area has expanded into way more gladed ski runs, picturesque views and amazing bowls of powder to go play in.
Oh yeah.. how could i forget. Four times a year, Whistler Blackcomb recognizes one person from each department for their hard work and being an outstanding employee.. And, this time I actually won for the whole enitre Guest Services department. This is a very prestigious award (ICE AWARD) as it is a big department with a lot of deserving candidates - and I am very honored to have received this award. I was treated to a day of skylining (fly through the air on cables - similar to ziptrekking - but way better) with 14 other winners, and a very nice dinner and award night. I brought along my friend Claire - (who was also nominated)as my dinner date, and had a great evening.
As for end of season, there have been way too many parties, and I cant wait to get laid off this week.. This season has been full on - and a very tiring and stressful one. As for my summer plans.. I dont have any yet.. as I am taking it one step at a time..if i can just make it through the last four days of work, I will be totally stoked. Do i plan on doing guest relations next year ? heck no.. but who knows what will happen by october.
My friends are starting to leave and head back to Australia - and it has been amazing to have them back- as 6 of them scored a second working holiday visa and graced Whistler with their presence. Now, if only I could get my hands on one of these visas
I will be heading home for a short week vacation soon, to see my little nephew Owen, and do some wedding plans (no.. I am not getting married
Overall this season has been amazing and full on and I am ready for the lazy days of summer to arrive - BBQ days at Lost lake, mountain biking and working on my tan.
xx 16 March MARCH MADNESSHorse drawn sleigh rides under the stars. Avalanche Awareness Tour. Brackendale bald eagle watching. Tim Hortons. Cross country skiing. snowboarding. snowmobile fondue dinner at crystal hut.
Yep. I think you can say February came and went, and all i have to show for it is a lot of pictures and great memories. where to begin?
My girlfriends and I went out for a nice evening sleigh ridge around the base of blackcomb mountain and had a great time being drawn by two beautiful clydesdale horses. My friend was our guide and took us down snow covered trails overlooking the town of whistler under a star lit sky. it was a great way to see whistler at night, and after snowboarding all day, a perfect way to end the evening.
cross country skiing.. you'd think by now, being canadian and all, that I would actually be decent?? well the truth be told, my managers' words were something like "i dont think i have ever tried to ski so fast in my life" .. you see i was behind her on a slight downhill and left my "brakes" somewhere, and she was trying to avoid a collision from behind. Have you ever tried to stop in cross country skiis? cuz you cant!! and if you know how to.. can you drop me a memo:-) needless to say, only a few falls, but tons of tears from laughing so hard. and lots of good times all around. Who would have thought that cross country skiing would make you laugh? I think I get a better workout laughing than I do skiing? none the less, the views of Lost Lake frozen and covered in snow are beautiful. We were actually very lucky to score a full moon night and perfect weather, maybe that would explain why we were all a little "loopy"? Well that is my excuse and I am sticking to it.
Now one of the highlights. i went up with some friends from work and went snowmobiling up to the Crystal hut. We each got to drive our own snowmobile and cruise the mountain trails after hours since the restaurant is at 6000ft. we had a very snowy night but none the less, a great time. the overlook of the whistler village and the journey up was great but pretty scary at the same time. we tipped a few of the snowmobiles, but all survived, with just one broken leg :-( and that is a whole other story. When we arrived at the crystal hut, we were greeted with live entertainment, a glass of wine, a nicely set table with meat and veggies that would mixed with our cheese fondue. it was such a nice evening and a great time out... and one late night.
Last but not least, in my "spare time" i have been volunteering with WASP - whistler adaptive sports program. I have worked with all different kinds of people, all ages and disabilities, and have really grown alot from these experiences. On a deeper level if more than anything. I have had some hilarious times on the mountains - laughing so hard that i couldnt breathe.. It is amazing how these guests can laugh at anything and everything, even the smallest things are funny. I work mostly with adults, and have been doing a lot of work with parapelgic skiers, who are placed into a bucket with one or two skis attached, and modified ski poles. I have experienced a few wipe outs here and there, and one disabled skier (parapelgic) who is faster than me!! yeah, umm...who needs to be in the program? but none the less, when i made a comment that my legs were burning and tired at the end of the day, he replied "my legs are fine"
It is hard to believe that the season is coming to its end. April 23, Whistler will be shutting down for the season, and Blackcomb will remain open for spring skiing until June 3rd. stay tuned for more to come....
xx 14 March Was February even here this year? February has been such a great month, spring like conditions, and it wont be long before I am spotting my sexy goggle tan
I had planned a free Avalanche awareness tour - now was that ever neat. I spent the whole day with a guide who showed us all the equipment and tools that are used when one journeys out into the unknown backcountry. We dug ourselves a pit and looked at the different layers of snow.. and it was actually quite interesting. we did a lot of researching snow temp, snow levels, and even got to go into the bombing hut, where they shoot bombs from every morning after we have our big dumps of snow. It was just interesting to see how much work is really involved to get that one "sweet run" in untouched powder. However this was only an intro, and there are plenty of courses to get certified.
Tim Hortons - that goes without saying.. YUMMY !! can we say french vanilla cappacino and 40 timbits? (actually i think there were 100 in my car by the end of our road trip)
Each year, Squamish ( which is located 45 min south of whistler) is blessed with hundreds of bald white eagles. Due to the high counts of salmon this time of year, BC hosts 20 000 eagles each year and makes this one of the most popular sight seeing activites. And to think tim hortons is just around the corner, it makes a great day trip. So, my car was loaded up with 5 girls and away we went. We spotted only a few, but were lucky to be around some telescopes and got amazing views of the ones we did spot. Working in Guest Relations has been unreal this year. I have scored so many amazing deals on activities that it almost makes it worth it to stay in this job for the extras. And the job isnt bad either, but I am ready for a change.
and last but not least... my other job as House Advisor.. what a year of challenges.. highs and lows, but will take away all the good moments.. the flood at 130 am, the "quiet" dog in my building wimpering away...the activites, events and ALL the crazy people that somehow ended up in my building? how did that work??
Thats all for now....
xx
